What Your Favorite Band Reveals About You

Quotes of the Week:

"At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want." — Lao Tzu

"The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind." — Caroline Myss

In this week's dose, I share the hidden force behind your favorite things.

Have you ever wondered why is your favorite color your favorite color?

Or why is your favorite band is your favorite band?

Did you choose them? Or did they choose you?

Sure you could rationalize it…

“Oh, the guitarist shreds. They put on the best concerts. Their vocals are mental.”

But that isn’t really why they’re your favorite

It’s because of something much deeper. A magnetic pull, connection, and resonance that you feel when you hear their songs.

For whatever reason, it lights you up more than other bands.

Think about this…

You can’t just make a decision right now to have a new favorite band. No way, you’re stuck with what you like and you have no say over it. Isn’t that wild?

You didn’t choose them. Something inside of you is drawn to them.

This is your essence.

This is what makes us unique and, in my experience, it’s the part of us that is intricately connected with the divine. It knows us better than we know ourselves. It guides us in a way. It’s our intuition, gut feelings…

It’s where our creativity and passion come from. It’s from where our gifts, purpose, and mission originate. It’s the part that SENSES when someone is looking at us before we see them.

This is the gold that we must learn to tap into. But it takes work. And the hardest part? It takes surrender.

Because you can’t control where it’ll take you.

That’s terrifying for most people. Most people are focused on controlling every outcome and trying to perfect their external world so they can feel happy and OK and successful on the inside.

BUT where essence will take you is exactly right for you. At a deeper, subconscious level it already knows - just as it knows your favorite music.

The hard part is the path isn’t linear.

And we can’t see how it’s going to work out. This is incredibly hard for our linear-thinking, rational survival mind. The mind wants all the answers before the test. It wants all 47 steps laid out perfectly before we start. It wants to have success guaranteed before we begin.

So it wants things that don’t exist… yet this is the mechanism we allow to run our lives?! Crazy.

We’ve been so conditioned to pursue external things to fit into society - to “ace” society’s test - that we completely ignore the part of us that will guide us to exactly what is best for us.

Our essence is tapped into something bigger than us - kinda like being tapped into the grid.

Characteristics of essence are things like presence, love, stillness, compassion, and creativity.

The most straightforward way to tap into it?

Quiet your mind.

Notice and let go of thoughts that arise.

Practice it every day until it becomes second nature.

I’ve found that you can even begin to ask it questions - it will start to respond and guide you.

But it’s impossible to connect with it when you’re in a survival state - stressed, anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, angry, shameful, etc.

So quiet the mind and focus on being still.

Have you ever thought about this before?

Let me know what comes up for you.
