Thoughts of the week:
“Learning too soon our limitations, we never learn our powers.” —M. McLaughlin
“If you accept a limiting belief, then it will become a truth for you.” ―L. Hay
In this week's dose, I share my thoughts on the power of changing our beliefs.
We each walk around holding beliefs that are either helping or hurting us.
Maybe you believe you can learn anything with enough time.
That you're athletic and can pick up a new sport easily.
That you can strike up a conversation with anyone.
Or perhaps that you need alcohol to take the edge off.
That rich people must've done something sleezy or illegal to get all they have.
That you don't have a creative bone in your body.
That you could never be a morning person...
Most of these beliefs live at an unconscious level in our mind.
We're unaware they exist and certainly didn't choose them.
But none of these beliefs are TRUE - the good, nor the bad ones.
They are subjective by nature and were auto-assigned by our mind.
BUT even though they are self-made, they drive our decisions and thus, our results.
And they still create our reality.
It's what makes lasting change and building habits that STICK so difficult.
To keep the weight off, stick to a gym routine, eat clean, prioritize sleep, meditate daily, etc.
It's why over 90% of people who diet gain the weight back.
Sustainable change has far less to do with what we do, and much more to do with our BELIEFS about ourselves as we take action.
Do we BELIEVE we are someone who:
- Eats clean?
- Goes to the gym?
- Protects their sleep?
- Meditates to build inner calmness?
- Or are we just going through the motions?
I've said this before, but the hardest thing we'll ever go through is a change in our identity.
It requires us to change what we believe about ourselves.
Not about any-thing else... OURSELVES.
And change is what our inner critic fears most.
It will be uncomfortable.
We will hit plateaus.
It'll feel like our hard work will never pay off.
It'll seem impossible.
But that's just our critic talking.
Trying to scare us out of all this growth + new results.
It knows what it knows, believes what it believes, and change is unfamiliar.
We cannot create new results with the same beliefs that got us to where we are.
We have to focus on redefining our beliefs so they serve us and the type of person we want to become.
If we're working on something and keep failing or can't get over the hump, we need to look deeply into our beliefs.
THIS is how inner work creates massive change.
LIMITING beliefs SABOTAGE results.
LIMITLESS beliefs CREATE results.
In order to create different results, we have to change what we believe about ourselves and what we are capable of.
Changing your identity is not only not easy, it's the hardest thing you'll ever do.
Some Qs to get you started:
What do you need to believe about yourself in order to create the change you want?
What does someone you look up to believe about life/themselves/their ability?
What needs to just be possible in order for you to change?
Let me know how it goes.
